Pixel 11 game issues with ANGLE: the default mode is to blame

The Pixel 11 series has gaming problems. According to Android Authority, ANGLE is to blame - Google deployed it as the default OpenGL ES implementation starting with the September 2026 update. Editor Robert Triggs called the gaming experience on the Pixel 11 Pro XL unacceptable.

What ANGLE is and why it causes problems

ANGLE is a translation layer that runs on top of Vulkan. A game still sends OpenGL ES commands, but ANGLE converts them to Vulkan for the graphics driver. The goal is to unify behavior across different Android devices. According to Android Authority, on the Pixel 11 Pro XL it is used throughout the entire rendering path, even for games built primarily on Vulkan, such as COD Mobile and Asphalt Legends. On the Pixel 10 Pro XL, the native path remains the default even after the update to Android 17 with the September patch.

According to Triggs, loading new data often triggers a cache rebuild, and frames then miss their deadline. Genshin Impact was hit the hardest, with noticeable micro-stutters that the Pixel 10 series did not suffer from. In COD Mobile, the average frame rate was 5 fps higher with the native path, while in Asphalt Legends ANGLE actually added 2 to 3 fps.

Pixel 11 game issues with ANGLE: what the tests showed

Chinese reviewer 大米评测 (Rice Review) tested the Pixel 11 in Genshin Impact, Zenless Zone Zero and Honkai: Star Rail. Notebookcheck summarized that the results point to inconsistent core scheduling on the Tensor G6 chip. In Genshin Impact, the Pixel 11 reaches an average of 43.3 fps and a 1% low of 11.7 fps, while the Xiaomi 15S Pro and iQOO 15 hold around 60 fps. In Honkai: Star Rail on Vulkan, the average is 19.1 fps and the 1% low is 6.9 fps. In Zenless Zone Zero it lags by roughly 16 fps at similar or lower power draw.

Notebookcheck added that Google still has work to do on the Tensor G6's scheduler, separately from the chip's efficiency and performance ceiling. A graphics bug in Genshin Impact was only fixed by update 7.1. The chip uses a CXTP-series GPU from Imagination; the previous Pixel 10 had a PowerVR series.

How to turn ANGLE off on the Pixel 11

Developer options are unlocked by tapping the build number in the about phone menu. Then you simply select native rendering in the ANGLE Preferences section. According to Android Authority, this may not help in every game, but it significantly reduced large fluctuations in frame times. The Pixel 11 Pro XL costs $1,299.

Sources disagree on what the main cause is. Android Authority sees the problem in ANGLE, while Notebookcheck, based on the Rice Review tests, also points to the Tensor G6's core scheduler.
