Windows 11 KB5095093 Preview Update Brings Point-in-Time Restore and Dozens of Fixes

Microsoft has rolled out the KB5095093 preview cumulative update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. This optional, non-security update packs a hefty list of fixes and new features, headlined by a long-awaited Point-in-Time restore capability.

Point-in-Time Restore: A Smarter System Restore

The standout feature lets you roll back your entire PC—OS, apps, settings, and personal files—to a previous state captured within the last 72 hours. Microsoft explains that restore points are created automatically every 24 hours for consumers, using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). They're stored locally and deleted after 72 hours or when storage runs low. Enterprise users get more granular control, with snapshot intervals ranging from 4 to 24 hours and adjustable retention.

Don't confuse this with the classic System Restore. Microsoft says Point-in-Time restore focuses on broader reliability issues and faster recovery, minimizing downtime without requiring deep technical know-how. The feature is accessible from Windows Recovery Environment and Settings.

Beyond the Big New Feature

KB5095093 also squashes a known bug that showed internal Recycle Bin filenames instead of the original name in deletion confirmation dialogs—an issue that appeared after the June 2026 security update. Here's what else is rolling out immediately:

  • Secure Boot: Better targeting data for automatic certificate updates, with a controlled phased rollout.
  • Netlogon: Improved secure channel connections between domain controllers and member servers set up before 2025.
  • Emoji Panel: Switches to GIPHY for GIFs after Google's Tenor API deprecation. You'll need to keep Windows updated to avoid a 'GIF service not available' error after June 30, 2026.
  • Networking: More reliable connections to shared network resources, including unauthenticated (null session) connections via NetUseAdd.
  • Taskbar: Notification badges now update correctly across apps.

Gradual Rollout: New Calendar, Widgets, and Accessibility

Some features are being phased in after the update installs:

  • Windows Update Calendar: Pause updates for up to 35 days by picking an end date, with the option to extend.
  • Widgets: A quieter experience—no more hover opens, minimized notifications, and customizable settings from the dashboard.
  • Accessibility: Full-screen color tint to reduce eye strain, plus a revamped Magnifier with direct zoom percentage input and adjustable increments from the magnifier bar.

File Explorer, Bluetooth, and Other Enhancements

File Explorer gets quick action buttons on hover (like 'Open file location'), faster launch, a fix for OneDrive shortcuts in admin mode, and better address bar support for double backslashes and quotes. The rename experience also sees polish.

Bluetooth improvements include syncing microphone mute state between audio mixer and Hands-Free Profile, faster AirPods pairing, better reliability for Beats Studio Pro, and reduced reconnection time after hibernation. Voice access and voice typing now support French, German, and Spanish with real-time grammar and punctuation correction.

Other fixes cover printing (IPP by default for new printers), WSL mirrored networking with VPNs, multi-monitor scrolling reliability, location services UI, touchpad right-click zone sizing, and a memory-management policy that helps PCs with over 32GB RAM run larger local AI models.

One Known Issue

A known bug may prevent third-party apps from launching Microsoft Office applications or opening documents. Microsoft suggests opening the app or document directly as a workaround, with a permanent fix in the works.

The KB5095093 update is optional but can be installed via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog. After installation, Windows 11 24H2 builds become 26100.8737 and 25H2 builds become 26200.8737.
