Nintendo continues its aggressive crackdown on Switch console emulators. The company has filed seven new complaints under the DMCA, resulting in the removal of more than 400 repositories on the GitHub platform. TorrentFreak reported on this development.
Massive repository takedown
The complaints target emulators such as Suyu, which gained popularity after the Yuzu emulator was discontinued in 2024. According to a publicly displayed DMCA notice on the Suyu repository, GitHub removed all 311 repositories in the network at Nintendo's request.
The action also affected several forks of the Yuzu emulator and repositories for the Skyline emulator. Skyline ceased operations in 2023 to avoid legal disputes with Nintendo, but its open-source code was available in a repository that is now offline.
Nintendo's arguments
In its DMCA notice, Nintendo states that Switch emulators illegally bypass Nintendo's protection measures and allow users to run illegal copies of Switch games. The company also cited two earlier cases as precedent: a lawsuit against Yuzu developer Tropic Haze and a lawsuit against a streamer who streamed pirated copies of Nintendo games.
Despite these actions, Switch emulators that have not been removed still exist. An example is the Eden emulator, which was removed from GitHub in March but can still be downloaded or compiled from its backup on Git. It can be expected that Nintendo will continue to file DMCA complaints and lawsuits against other emulators that emerge.
