LineageOS 24 Android 17: New Apps and WebUSB Flashing

LineageOS 24 Android 17: New Apps and WebUSB Flashing

LineageOS 24 built on Android 17 is officially out. The creators of this alternative Android distribution released it earlier than planned, in December 2026, just a few days before the project's tenth anniversary. That falls on 24 December 2026. The release was reported by news.lavx.hu, androidsage.com, and linuxiac.com.

The new version is designated LineageOS 24.0. Security patches from the period between August 2025 and October 2026 have been incorporated into the active branches.

LineageOS 24 and Android 17: New Apps

The biggest visual change is the transition of almost all core apps to Material Design 3 Expressive. A new built-in image editor, Canvas, has also been added, capable of basic cropping, white balance, and filters. It complements the Glimpse and Aperture tools.

The Updater has also been redesigned. By default, it supports streamed updates on A/B devices, which should significantly shorten installation time. The work was led by contributor pjgowtham. According to news.lavx.hu and linuxiac.com, on devices without A/B partitioning, the recovery partition is updated automatically on the next boot after a successful installation.

The Twelve music player loads large libraries faster, works better with Jellyfin, and offers a separate tab for the most played tracks. The Jelly browser now supports PWA-like apps via a new shortcut.

WebUSB Flashing and Support for Older Devices

Installation is now easier even for less experienced users. At flash.lineageos.org, the developers have launched tools for flashing directly in the browser, built on WebUSB technology. They can handle the ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn, and Samsung Odin protocols. Nicholas Lim and Luk1337 contributed to the design of the tools. The official guides in the wiki remain the default and fully supported path, while the web tools are only an optional alternative.

Older devices with Linux kernel 4.4 and 4.9 have their further development closed. No new LineageOS 23.2 or 24.0 build will be created for them; they remain on the LineageOS 22.2 branch, which continues to receive monthly security patches.

According to linuxiac.com, the Catapult launcher for Android TV has received a new look, including animations and icons, and the SetupWizard setup assistant has also been refreshed.

According to news.lavx.hu, the developers completed the code rebase in roughly four months from the June release of Android 17. Builds will expand to more supported devices in the coming weeks as maintainers bring them into compliance with the requirements. Those interested can find an overview in the official LineageOS wiki.
