Google is working on adding support for Gemini agent tasks to Gmail. Thanks to them, users could enter AI Inbox tasks that Gemini will handle for them. The new feature was reported by Android Authority, which examined the code of the Gmail app.
According to Android Authority, text appeared in the code of the Gmail app in version v2026.09.28 that hints at how the feature could work. Abhishek Yadav drew attention to a post on X.
Gemini agent tasks in Gmail: what will appear in the AI Inbox
Once launched, the AI Inbox could display a "Start with Gemini" button alongside suggested actions. After pressing it, Gemini will start working on the task and the inbox will show the status "In progress" for it. For tasks that require a reply to an email, a "Draft Reply" option could appear.
Other elements were also found in the code:
- the status "Needs your input" for tasks that need input or confirmation from the user,
- a "Give input" button, with which the user adds the information needed to complete the task,
- the status "Ready for review" for tasks that Gemini has completed, so the user can approve or reject the changes,
- the buttons "Open task" and "View progress".
It can't happen without human confirmation
Although Gemini will work on the task on its own, according to Android Authority it will turn to a human when in doubt and wait for their confirmation before sending an email or marking the task as completed.
The AI Inbox should handle email overload
According to Android Authority, the AI Inbox is one of the few Gmail features with artificial intelligence that genuinely help manage email inbox overload. It shows important messages and tasks that need to be handled.
It is not known when Google will release the feature. Android Authority only states that Google is working on it.
