Microsoft is preparing major changes to connect Android and Windows 11

Microsoft has long been working on connecting Windows with Android. The Phone Link app (formerly Your Phone) allows transferring certain functions and content from the phone to the computer. According to a new report, Microsoft is now exploring expanding Phone Link to make these experiences feel more natural directly within the system.

New smartphone panel on the taskbar

One of the planned improvements is a new dedicated smartphone panel. A phone icon would appear on the taskbar, and clicking it would open a floating window with an overview of the phone's status and buttons for quick toggling of features such as Do Not Disturb, vibrate, and find my phone. It will also be possible to drag and drop files onto the icon to transfer them to the phone.

Improved Phone Companion in the Start menu

According to sources, Microsoft will also improve the Phone Companion in the Start menu. It will display more recent activities without needing to open the full Phone Link app. Hovering over activities will show details, such as the full message.

Separate Messages app

Another new feature should be a separate Messages app. Although Phone Link already includes a messaging function, the new app would work independently and could be pinned to the Start menu or taskbar.

Improved clipboard synchronization

Microsoft is reportedly also working on synchronizing the entire clipboard history between the phone and computer, not just the last copied item as currently.

According to information, these features are in internal prototyping and may change before release. Microsoft will likely gather feedback from the Insider community.
