Google has introduced a new way to log into your account that is extremely personal – selfie login. If you forget your password or two-factor authentication fails, you can set up login using a selfie video.
How selfie login works
The setup is similar to face unlock on a phone. The first step is to record an initial video where you turn your head in different directions for biometric recognition. If you then find yourself locked out of your account, you can choose selfie login and, following instructions, repeat the head movements which are compared with the original video.
The feature works on mobile devices and computers. It is being rolled out gradually, and you can check availability at g.co/signin-selfie.
Security against deepfakes
Google claims that selfie login is protected against forgery. "When using a selfie to log in, we use multiple layers of security to help prevent impersonation attempts, such as fake photos and videos (deepfakes)," the company said. "For example, we compare your video to the stored selfie and require simple movements to prove it's a live video."
Other recovery options
Selfie login is not the only option. Also available are passkeys processed at the device level or adding trusted contacts for account recovery.
